My rating: 4 of 5 stars
I received Love and Other Secrets by Christina Mandelski from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. This has no impact on my review. My thoughts are my own.
I have a hard time getting into prom books now mostly because I’m getting older and each year certain young adult stuff just isn’t my thing anymore. For me it’s prom stuff because I feel like I can’t relate to the excitement of that. I always liked the after party in high school better than the actual prom anyway. I put this book down the first time because of this reason, I just didn’t see myself being able to relate to it at all because of the age difference and just not getting the hype of it.
I quickly warmed up Alex and Bailey though and their friendship. They were pretty much from two different social classes in high school but they ended up being secret friends anyway mostly because Alex wanted to keep her to himself and because Bailey worked late and she went over to his house after work a lot. Their friendship was basically a night time friendship, but I pretty much like anything that is secretive/forbidden. I liked the rotating chapters and how believable it ended up being for me.
The prom plot ended up being cute and not overbearing to me. I don’t think promposals were a big deal when I was in high school, but maybe that’s because I didn’t exactly hang out with the party kids… my high school was also relatively small too. They were nice to read about though. I liked the whole Caleb/Bailey plot even though I was a bit worried about it at first.
The misgivings I had with the book were just the beginning because I wasn’t sure it’d be my type of book after all, and the drama that happened towards the middle of the book. The pace was fast and I like that moment when I’m able to get sucked into the book. The rating is a four star read and I’d definitely recommend it for those looking for books about prom and high school romance or spring time young adult books.
Thank you Netgalley and publishers for giving me the chance to read this book.
