Top Ten Tuesday was created by The Broke and the Bookish in June of 2010 and was moved to That Artsy Reader Girl in January of 2018. It was born of a love of lists, a love of books, and a desire to bring bookish friends together.

It’s been a long time since I have done a Top Ten Tuesday. I usually had a review or was busy. I do not own the graphic. Here’s the actual topic for today: Books I Bought/Borrowed/ Because… (Fill in the blank. You can do 10 books you bought for the same reason, i.e., pretty cover, recommended by a friend, blurbed by a favorite authors, etc. OR you could do a different reason for each pick.) I saw somebody else do the books read because of hype and thought it was great because who hasn’t read hyped books?

  1. Vampire Academy by Richelle Mead. Pretty sure I heard a little bit about this book before I actually bought it way back in 2009. Follow up: Twilight… Yes, I read it because of how popular it was way back in 2006. I hated every moment I read Twilight, but I loved Vampire Academy and Bloodlines.

2. The Maze Runner totally did not work for me. I heard talk about this book while I was in college.  Follow up: The Hunger Games. I did like that second time through.  When it first came out, I was totally against it because of how popular it was.

3. Cinder by Marissa Meyer. Follow up: Winter.

4. A Court of Thorns and Roses. Book two was the only book that I was able to get into. Otherwise this had no affect on me. Follow up: Rest of the books in this trilogy.

5. Caraval by Stephanie Garber. The first one was just ok, but it was the second one that drew me in. Follow up: Legendary and Finale.

6. Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell. Follow up: Carry on of course. I did like both of these books!

7. The Geek’s Guide to Unrequited love. I could not get into this book at all. No follow up.

8. Trials of Apollo. I did like this series, but I was never a huge Rick Riordan fan. No follow up.

9. The Hate U Give. I actually enjoyed this book.  I heard about it from an old coworker and then the blogging world when I joined.
The Hate U Give10. Ok,this is going to get a few answers because this is the last number. I read The Cruel Prince. Did not enjoy it but it was a library book.  What if it’s us was also another library ebook. It was ok. I absolutely LOVED A Curse So Dark and Lonely. Opposite of Always was ok. Serpent and Dove was ok. Annnnnnnnd of course, Harry Potter had to get on the list somewhere even though I first read it in 1998 before it started getting super popular.

  3. I very recently read Ender’s Game because of the hype. Not a fan. But I’m also working my way through the Harry Potter series because of the hype, and I’ve been enjoying the series. Hyped books are a fascinating study of how personal preference can be so vastly different for different people.

    1. Yay!! I’m so glad you are enjoying Harry Potter!! I have been working from home for almost two weeks now and I still haven’t reread it yet. I did watch the first movie this weekend.

      And yes, it is interesting how so many hyped books have different opinions from people.

My husband watched the movies by himself a few years ago (neither of us watched or read anything to do with HP until that), so I’ve watched each movie with him after finishing the corresponding book. The movies are like a whole different story, it’s crazy. By the last one I’ve seen so far (Order of the Phoenix), I had decided to stop pointing differences out to him, because of course with the size of that book, I knew they’d have to leave entire plots out. And I’ve now strongly suggested to my husband that he listen to the audiobook for the series (he doesn’t read, but does listen), because the stories are so much richer. Hopefully he will.
