Book review: Always and Forever, Lara Jean by Jenny Han

Always and Forever, Lara Jean (To All the Boys I've Loved Before, #3)Always and Forever, Lara Jean by Jenny Han

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This is the first time I went with the unpopular opinion but ended up going with the popular opinion. For those that follow me on Goodreads, you’ll already know this was originally a DNF at 27% but then I decided to pick it up again after watching the movie TATBILB. That DNF review is still listed at the bottom of this review just because this almost never happens with a DNF book for me.

This book is a 3.5. but it’s rated four stars. I did like the movie To all the Boys I’ve loved before and the first two books and wanted to try to give Always and Forever, Lara Jean another try. I think this book was the hardest to get into and the hardest one to like because of all the misgivings I had when I first got into it and I was trying not to rush it because the movie was coming out on Friday.

Don’t ever rush a book just because the movie is coming out because it won’t be enjoyed properly.

Anyway, this book did pick up for me a bit more during the middle and I think Lara Jean actually did mature more throughout the rest of the book especially when she got into a certain school that I won’t spoil here. I think she handled everything towards the end well especially all of the goodbyes. The book ending was written well too, I liked the contract at the end of it best. I was a John and Lara Jean shipper before but now I like Peter and I think I might have to read the whole series again and watch the movie again too.

Original thoughts are below… most are still true, but it ended up being better after I took a break to read other books first. That made a difference for me.

Did not finish at 27 percent even though I think I checked out before that. I was all for giving the book a chance but I don’t think I can finish it.

The main issue I had with it was that every other chapter it seemed Lara Jean cared way too much about being a virgin and being scared of what everybody else in her class thought  when it really isn’t that big of a deal at all. It isn’t about everybody else’s approval or disapproval at least.

I kept trying, but I’m not going to read something that I’m not enjoying just because it’s going to be on Netflix. I might give it another try some other time when maybe the hype goes down but for now this just wasn’t for me. The covers were fun, that was what drew me in for the series along with the plot of the first book. But sadly it just wasn’t for me.

Again, I ended up finishing the book and it’s rated four stars now.

  1. Ooh, glad you gave this book another chance! I haven’t watched the movie or read any book but seeing the HYPE around it makes it impossible. I might commit the ultimate bookish sin and watch the movie before reading the book. 😂
